About Us
Why an Engineer Who Are Structural Engineers & What Do They Do?
Structural Engineers are specialists in the design, construction, repair, conversion and extension of buildings and other structures both large and small. They are concerned with the analysis and design of key structural elements within a building, such as foundations, columns, beams etc. and ensuring the structural integrity and stability of the whole structural system.
Why Appoint an Engineer?
The structural system is an essential part of a building, not only is it able to resist the anticipated loads but it also forms the skeleton for which all other trades are to work around. It is therefore vital that the correct structure is chosen to suit the project; any mistakes would have serious implications both structurally and financially.
A qualified Structural Engineer is someone who has a Degree in Engineering, and a minimum of four years design experience. Some Engineers go on to become a Chartered Member of the Institution of Structural Engineers, which requires a seven hour exam and evidence of continued professional development. Also qualified Structural Engineers will have Personal Indemnity Issuance, which ensures the client is financially secure should there be a malfunction with the structural system
A Structural Engineer will have an understanding of the primary materials used within the construction industry, such as concrete, masonry, timber, steel, and an understanding of their strengths and weaknesses. Whether designing a single beam or investigating an historical building for defects, this understanding allows a Structural Engineer to provide a structural solution that is viable, fit for purpose and economical. In circumstances when the stability of any property has been affected, for example, subsidence, fire, flooding or explosion, Structural Engineers are able to determine the degree of damage and suggest the necessary precautions and remedial action.
Background About Us
Our consultancy was established in 1996 by Bob Johnson as a sole practitioner; located within Shrewsbury town centre, Bob set out to provide structural services to the Shropshire and Mid Wales regions.
Since then we have grown and evolved into a successful trading company with an approach to engineering that continues to focus on providing flexible, practical solutions; not only within our local regions but across the UK
We provide a wide range of services from design of individual elements, to complete Engineering support for larger projects. Over the years we have been able to work on a variety of projects from the contemporary to the historic. We recognise that each project is bespoke and that each client has different expectations, we therefore pride ourselves on providing a transparent, high quality service that meets or in most cases exceeds these expectations.
Although we enjoy the challenges provided by a contemporary project we have all come to share an enthusiasm for historic buildings. The past decade has allowed us to work on numerous Historic Buildings across Shropshire and Wales. This has given us an opportunity to observe the methods of our ancestors and to expand our knowledge of materials in a way that enhances the performance of the building without impacting unduly on the environment.
