Denbigh Hospital

Denbighshire North Wales

Client: Denbighshire County Council

Architect: Graham Frecknall

Contractor: Wye Valley Demolition Ltd.

Built in 1844, this pioneering Hospital had fallen into disrepair. It was sold for redevelopment by the NHS in the 1990's which had not taken place.

Concerned with the deteriorating state of the building fabric Phil Ebbrell Denbighshire Conservation Officer recognised the Architectural and Historical importance of the building and following a protracted legal process issued an Urgent Works Notice which enabled the Authority to undertake works necessary to save the building from complete loss.

The main aim was to make the was to make  the building made weather tight, this involved replacing large sections of the traditionally formed roof structure.

The craftsmanship and attention to detail was of the highest standard and losing some of these features was difficult however, our role was to assess the material condition of the construction and devise a safe method to remove those elements which were beyond repair whilst still maintaining stability. Specifically all timber was removed, this included floors, roofs and a plethora of embedded timbers. The planned operations were undertaken carefully and in sequence  with regular reviews checking and reappraising.
