Llanymynech Lime Works Scheduled Ancient Monument – [900k] funds were provided by numerous local and national bodies including Heritage Lottery Fund, English Heritage Shropshire County Council to bring this important industrial site back to life and provide a wildlife habitat.
The project associated with restoration and repair of lime kilns and associated facilities. In particular the Hoffman Kiln a rare example of continuous lime burning process contained within a large oval brick kiln.
Understanding the material condition of the vaulted structure forming the Kiln structure was challenging and in particular whether the pronounced internal deformity represented a significant defect or an unusual or gradual settlement of a structure which experienced a wide range of temperatures in its working life.
The presence of a bat colony restricted work on the works on kiln and the erection of the canopy structure to short periods of time between hibernation and breeding.
